The history:
Of this Street – The memory of the gallant adventure of D. José I with D. Teresa de Távora that ended with an attack on the physical integrity of the sovereign, was recorded on the spot with the construction of a Church, dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Livramento because he left unharmed and Saint Joseph by the name of the king.
Of Ajuda: The parish of Ajuda is located between the beach of Belém and the Serra de Monsanto. It was a poor place for agriculture. Legend has it that a pastor, passing by on the spot, had an apparition of the Virgin. The news spread quickly, and soon believers came and settled there. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda was built for the adoration of the Virgin, which also led to the construction of houses and tents. The small sanctuary quickly gave way to a larger church. The number of pilgrims grew every year, even the highest members of society paid devotion to Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. An example of this was D. Catarina, wife of D. João III. The nobility tried to settle in the place to better worship the Virgin, turning Ajuda into an area of habitation for wealthy people.
The parish was established in 1551.
